Collaboration
Every success story begins with a step in the right direction
The Collaboration is a movement by Strides Interactive to encourage more people to take part in a more serious role in games development. We want to help you fulfill your dreams if you’re willing contribute to our cause.
A member who has been officially accepted by the circle will hereby be known as a Strider.
Our objectives
We want to make games development a serious hobby. Not just a wannabe project or all talk without action.
Therefore, we’re encouraging individuals or teams in all ways of game development to join us in a closed-source community with projects that are on-going in iterations or others that have yet to be started.
As we release our products, we use the popular business model known as Profit Sharing to reward our Striders accordingly to the work they’ve implemented and deployed.
The details of the sharing percentage varies from project to project. You’ll see a rough example of it below.
Why aren’t we Open Source?
First of all, we’re not against open source.
The reason why the Collaboration isn’t open to all is due to the fact that we’re a small and lean team. We simply cannot afford the time to qualify source code check-ins and conduct reviews to ensure that they don’t contain any show stopper bugs.
In short, we are avoiding the fate of becoming code reviewers and build masters instead of game developers.
This is the reason why it’s closed source, where the openings are small and easily maintainable. However, there’s still an area that is open to open source development - that is development using Strides Octopus directly.
Its derivative - SIGOL - also known as Strides Interactive Game Orchestration Language is free for all to use and therefore is open to the public.
Lastly, a smaller reason to it which is probably important to some is that in our closed-source model, the rewards and returns are transparent, clear cut and indisputable.
Entitlements
As such, Striders are also entitled to support within our circle via our forum. We’re not expecting professionals to join us, expecting salaries and so on. For more details, please see the point on renumeration below.
After all the talk, let’s get straight to the point. I’ll list down what we have to want from you as a Strider:
Pre-requisites
- A progressive contribution towards StridesLib
- A feasible plan of contribution
- A timeline that can be reasonbly ranged (I can’t wait for 1 year for a class right?)
- A list of deliverables which I will work with you
- Some level of commitment AT LEAST to the forum
Renumeration
Of course, in return, here’re the things we can offer for your contributions:
- StridesLib Core Library source codes (for API Bridge members only)
- StridesLib Application Executable that powers up the game.
- Strides Octopus, a suite of editors which contains loads of goodies to assist game development:
- Includes standard editors which were previously developed to support Jedi Wing
- Script Instruction and Editor suite which can help script out the entire game contents (please do not think of LUA script; it’s different.)
- Utility goodies such as :
- Data Peeker to read into any files to access their contents natively
- Dynamic Classes (simple classes types only)
- Codec for encryption
- Sprite Creator to help piece different pictures together to form a cartoon strip or matrix (useful for particle effects as well)
- Engine configuration utility to help configure the engine properties prior to deployment
- Full support
- As part of the team, you’ll be constantly updated on our progress and new game projects
- A Strider can opt to partake our future game development projects in vital roles like game designer
Culture
How would the culture be like? Certainly it’s not a normal standard development environment. The Collaboration will be a hobbyist-like environment where a Strider will work to sustain a livelihood while working on the agreed scope. It’s basically an off-office hours kind of effort.
We believe having creativity in diversity. That means while you may be working for another company while helping us with your own time, you’ll find that you’ll have space and time for hobby and work respectively. Only then, making games will become a source of relaxation and not the source for stress. At the same time, different exposures allow different ideas of different levels to flow into the Strides community as well.
In the Strides Community, the following are highly valued in order: (top being the most valued trait)
1) Integrity
2) Responsibility
3) Professionalism
4) Discipline
5) Contributions
6) Passion
7) Skills and Talents
So if you think that you fit into the picture, you can start your game development knowledge accumulation progress today. Just by joining the forum, make a post in the Striders forum, we’ll attend to your interest as soon as possible.
Profit Sharing Structure
A typical profit sharing structure will consist of the following:
1 - Profits are based on Revenue minus cost of doing business and non-technical commission.
2 - Strides Interactive LLP will always be entitled to 20% of the profits
3 - The rest of the 80% will be split according to the work done, modules used and deployed systems which is divided into the following:
| Module/Component |
Percentage % of profits |
| Graphics (technical only) | 12% |
| Audio | 5% |
| Input | 3% |
| Network | 10% |
| Database (if applicable) | 7% |
| Game Application (all game specific logic) | 7% |
| Game Orchestration (all game specific orchestration) | 7% |
| Concept Arts | 7% |
| Object Modeling (modified/custom-made) | 7% |
| Sound Assets (custom-made) | 2% |
| Music Assets (composed assets) | 7% |
| Game Design/Storyline | 6% |
| Total Possible Profit Sharing % | 80% |
Those that are not listed in the list are either salary based or commission based roles. The deal sweetener is that -
If your work is reused in the next project and deployed, you’ll get the SAME percentage of profits without any further contributions!
